1901 18' Custom Built E Gerry Emmons

This is a antique wood boat that has been in my family since circa 1900. The boat has not seen the water in near 70 years. It has been stored in a barn ever since. The hit or miss one cylinder engine was removed in the 1960's. The boat is still in great shape but will need to be restored to be water worthy. What a great project and very rare find for the antique boat enthusiast Call Todd [removed phone] BOAT OWNERS COMMENTARY: Here we have a unique find in an antique wood boat. The Boat is a E Gerry Emmons motorised launch which was manufactured in Swampscott, Ma. circa 1900. The boat was purchased new by my Great Great Grandfather who owned a bicycle shop in Boston in the late 1800's. He named the boat "The Minnet" after a sister Minnie. The boat was used briefly on the Charles River then in the early 1900's transported by train to the town of Halifax, Ma. and the Browns' summer house where it was to navigate the waters of Lake Monponsett. The period photo is from a postcard with an inscription of "How does this suit you?" The card is postmarked Aug. 14, 1905. The "Minnet" plied the waters of lake Monponsett giving rides to family and friends alike for decades. Family legend has been passed down that on a stormy September day with the wind increasing my Grandfather and his brother at the helm rode out the storm which came to be known as the Great Hurricane of 1938. My Great Grandfather who was in Boston at the time of the storm was none to happy that his boys risked themselves and the boat. Shortly after the wild ride in 1938 the "Minnet" was put up in the barn and to this day 73 years later she has sat. Unfortunately in the following years the one cylinder Emmons engine was removed from the boat and lost to time or perhaps an antiques dealer whom my Great Grandfather often sold items to. Over the years the boat has served as a place to store other boating things such as life vests bits of wood and beach toys. Recently the property has undergone a rebuilding phase. The barn was cleaned out and this rare E Gerry Emmons launch was once again "uncovered". Lacking the time, the interest and a place to restore this classic treasure this family heirloom is regrettably up for sale. The launch does not have a trailer or an engine but the mounts, shaft and prop are still there. There are pieces to the rudder but not the entire assembly. The fuel tank in the bow is intact but due to the age will need to be rebuilt. The wood is solid with no dry rot but it does have several layers of paint on the exterior hull and layers of varnish on the decks. The boat measures 18 feet 3 inches from bow to stern not including the rudder and is 5 feet wide at the waist. For history buffs look to copies of "The Rudder" from around 1900 for articles about Emmons and advertisements for his boats. Also look to Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut for more information about E Gerry Emmons boats. This very rare and classic E Gerry Emmons motorised launch is a terrific project for the right enthusiast to restore and return it to its' glory be it in a museum or once again on the water.
